prednisone side effects

One of the prednisone side effects that are most commonly seen is thinning skin or hair. People taking prednisone often find their hair or skin, becoming thinner as the body adjusts to the medication. It usually begins in the first few weeks after starting the drug and gradually builds up until the desired effect is achieved. Thinning skin or hair can be caused by various things. Some medications may cause the skin to thicken faster than others, or the medication may cause hair or skin to break easily, or it can affect the way the drug works to break down the proteins that give the skin its elasticity. Regardless of what is causing the problem, most people find that the condition improves once the medication is stopped.

Patients may also experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, dry skin or itching, and flushing. These same patients may also experience long-term effects such as hearing problems, vision problems in coordination or balance. Due to the serious side effects of taking prednisone long-term, patients may find that they need to receive prednisone treatment for the rest of their life to prevent these and other life-threatening problems from occurring.

There are two forms of prednisone for patients who need it for short-term use only. The two types are called systemic and brand-name drugs. The brand-name drug days is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating moderate to severe joint pain, such as osteoarthritis. The generic drug, also known as a franchise, is approved for short-term use in patients with osteoarthritis.

The common side effects of prednisone include tiredness, weakness, diarrhea, and muscle weakness. Patients should not take high doses during cold weather or when traveling, as this can further deteriorate the condition. People with liver disease should not take prednisone, as the medication makes its way through the body. It can also be very harmful to those with preexisting heart disease or diabetes.

Another side effect is constipation, as taking low doses of prednisone may increase the risk of diarrhea. Patients should avoid taking prednisone if they have problems with heartburn or acid reflux, as taking small doses can aggravate these conditions. Taking prednisone with grapefruit extract may also increase the risk of heartburn. If you have a history of stomach ulcers, you should discontinue use immediately and contact your doctor.

One of the less serious side effects is jaundice. Jaundice can occur in people with liver disease or people taking specific medications, such as steroids. It can also occur in people with light or pale skin. This condition is usually reversible once the medication is stopped. Jaundice rarely occurs in children, but it can occur in some patients that are prescribed prednisone oral tablet.

Other side effects include muscle weakness, rash, and changes in vision. These side effects can occur in any amount of usage, especially if you are taking prednisone for an extended period of time. Some of these symptoms can be relieved by decreasing the dosage but these symptoms can persist even when the dose is reduced. Patients should contact their doctor immediately if they experience any of these symptoms. Although these are some of the more common side effects, there are others that have been reported and your doctor will be able to help in determining the cause of these symptoms.
